Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *kъnęgyni; compare Ukrainian княги́ня (knjahýnja), Serbo-Croatian кнѐгиња, Slovene knegínja (tonal orthography). By surface analysis, княг- (knjag-) + -ы́ня (-ýnja). князь (knjazʹ) is derived from Early Proto-Slavic *kuningu, from Proto-Germanic *kuningaz, with з by the application of Slavic progressive palatalization, which was blocked by the following *y in *kъnęgyni.
