Etymology

Inherited from Old Polish igracz, from Proto-Slavic *jьgračь. By surface analysis, grać + -acz. Sense 1 is due to the fact that music played by a musician (gracz) was often played while harvesting to increase moral and productivity, but as a result sometimes the harvesters would accidentally miss an ear.
