The Two Czechs: Spisovná vs Obecná Čeština

Study Czech for a year, land in Prague, and the first barman breaks your heart: nobody speaks like your textbook. They speak obecná čeština — common Czech — and this is the lesson that makes it click.

One Language, Two Outfits

Spisovná čeština is the written standard: books, news, school, this course. Obecná čeština is what Bohemia actually speaks — at home, at work, at the pub. Neither is "wrong"; they're registers, and every native switches between them without thinking.

The ý → ej Swap

Spoken Bohemia turns long -ý into -ej: dobrý → dobrej, malý → malej, být → bejt. «To je dobrej nápad» — that's a good idea, as actually pronounced between friends.

The é → ý Swap and the v-

Long é relaxes to ý/í: dobré mléko → dobrý mlíko, malé okno → malý vokno. And word-initial o- often grows a v-: okno → vokno, on → von, oni → voni.

The Endings Relax Too

Instrumental plurals unify to -ma: s kluky → s klukama, s kamarády → s kamarádama. And bychom → bysme: mohli bysme — we could. Even děkuji has a register ladder: děkuji (paper) → děkuju (neutral) → dík (buddies).

What YOU Should Do

Understand obecná, speak neutral. Decode the street; answer in tidy standard-leaning Czech (děkuju-level, not děkuji-level). Nobody expects a learner to fake the -ej — and in Moravia, where speech runs closer to the standard, they'll cheerfully tease Prague for it anyway.

Common Mistakes

• Correcting natives. Vokno isn't an error — it's a register. Smile and decode.
• Writing obecná čeština. Emails in dobrej-Czech read like costume; keep the street forms spoken.
• Panic at sou/seš. The dropped j- (jsou → sou, jsi → seš) is the same verb in streetwear.

What You Can Do Now

You can understand real Prague speech — dobrej, vokno, bysme and all — keep your own Czech neutral without sounding like a textbook, and explain Czech diglossia better than most Czechs bother to.
