Plural-cases in Russian

Cases in the Plural

Every course quietly skips this lesson, and learners plateau exactly here. Not us. The genitive plural is the last real boss of Russian nouns — and you've been fighting it successfully since your first сто рублей.

The Money Rule, Finally Named

After 5+, много (many), мало (few) and сколько (how many), nouns take the genitive plural:

Russian
пять рублей
English
five roubles — the shop pattern, explained at last
Russian
много людей
English
many people
Russian
мало времени
English
little time
Russian
Сколько дней?
English
How many days?

Its Three Endings

The Tidy Rest

The other plural cases share one melody — learn the trio once:

Case

Ending
-ам / -ям

Я даю детям книги. — I give the children books.
Case
instrumental
Ending
-ами / -ями
Example
Я гуляю с друзьями. — I stroll with friends.
Case
prepositional
Ending
-ах / -ях

Мы говорим о книгах. — We talk about books.

Your New Favourite Sentence

Нет проблем!

No problem!

Note: нет + genitive plural. You'll say it daily — and now you know exactly why it ends that way.

А

У тебя много друзей в Москве?

Do you have many friends in Moscow?

Б

Да! Пять человек из университета, и мы часто гуляем с друзьями Анны.

Yes! Five from university, and we often go out with Anna's friends.

Common Mistakes

  • много + nominative. Много люди → много людей. Quantity words herd nouns into the genitive plural.
  • два рублей. The 2–4 slot takes the singular form: два рубля. Genitive plural starts at five.
  • Forgetting the trio. Датам? Instrumentalах? The plural melody is -ам, -ами, -ах — one set for everything.

What You Can Do Now

You can count anything past four, quantify your life (много работы, мало времени), and speak about groups — с друзьями, о книгах, детям. The noun system is, at last, complete.
