Instrumental Case in Croatian

The Croatian Instrumental

The instrumental is the case of how and with whom — the tram you ride, the friend beside you, the milk in your coffee. Zagreb runs on it (tramvajem), the islands depend on it (trajektom), and no kava s mlijekom happens without it.

The Shapes

Gender
masculine / neuter
Ending
-om
Example
vlak → vlakom, auto → autom, selo → selom
Gender
masc. after soft consonant
Ending
-em
Example
tramvaj → tramvajem, prijatelj → prijateljem
Gender
feminine
Ending
-om
Example
sestra → sestrom, kava → kavom

The soft consonants that trigger -em are the ones with hooks and glides — j, lj, nj, č, ć, š, ž. Hence tramvajem but vlakom.

Travel: No Preposition

How you travel is bare instrumental — no preposition at all:

Croatian
Idem autobusom.
English
I'm going by bus.
Croatian
Idem vlakom.
English
I'm going by train.
Croatian
Idemo trajektom na otok.
English
We're taking the ferry to the island.
Croatian
Idem biciklom.
English
I'm going by bike.

Company: s / sa

With people (and milk), the instrumental takes s:

Croatian
Pijem kavu s prijateljem.
English
I'm having coffee with a friend.
Croatian
kava s mlijekom
English
coffee with milk
Croatian
sa sestrom
English
with my sister
Croatian
sa šećerom
English
with sugar

The s/sa rule: sa appears before s, š, z, ž — the tongue needs the vowel. Everywhere else, plain s.

Idem na more s bratom i sa sestrom.

I'm going to the seaside with my brother and my sister.

Note: s bratom (b is fine bare), sa sestrom (s needs the sa).

Asking: s kim? čim?

S kim? — with whom? Čim? — by what means?

💬 Planning the island trip

A

Čim idete na Brač?

One more instrumental job waits down the road — baviti se sportom (to do sports) — but that's the hobbies lesson's payoff. For now: ride things, accompany people, sweeten coffee.
