Dative-case in Croatian

The Croatian Dative

The dative is the to-me case — and in Croatian it does far more than hand things over. Liking, needing, feeling cold, being bored: they all land on the dative. Its little words (mi, ti, mu) are clitics, so they hide in second position like sam and je.

Daj mi kavu, molim te!

Give me the coffee, please!

Note: mi tucked right after the verb — second position, as the clitic law demands.

sviđa mi se — I Like

Croatian liking is dative-first: the liked thing is the subject, and you're just the dative bystander it pleases.

Croatian
Sviđa mi se Split.
Literally
Split pleases to-me. — I like Split.
Croatian
Sviđa joj se stan.
Literally
The flat pleases to-her. — She likes the flat.
Croatian
Sviđaju mi se otoci.
Literally
The islands please to-me. — I like the islands.

Note the plural: several things → sviđaju — because they are doing the pleasing.

treba mi — I Need

Needing works the same way: Treba mi X — X is needed to-me.

Croatian
Treba mi kava.
English
I need a coffee. (the national morning sentence)
Croatian
Treba mi pomoć.
English
I need help.
Croatian
Treba nam vremena.
English
We need time.

You'll also hear «trebam kavu» with a normal subject — fine too. But treba mi is the idiomatic heart.

How You Feel

States land on the dative — and you've been speaking this pattern since day one:

Croatian
Hladno mi je.
English
I'm cold. (it's cold to-me)
Croatian
Dosadno mu je.
English
He's bored.
Croatian
Drago mi je!
English
Nice to meet you — it's dear to-me. Chapter 1, decoded at last.

Going to Someone

Going to a person (not a place) takes the dative — full nouns end -u (masc.) / -i (fem.):

Idem k baki na ručak.

I'm going to grandma's for lunch.

Note: k + dative — k baki. The lunch will be enormous; resistance is futile.
