Complex Sentences
The last grammar mountain: sentences with rooms in them. Relative clauses through the case system, the truth about da, and the crowning achievement of Croatian word order — the full clitic cluster, where every little word knows its seat.
koji Beyond the Nominative
The relative bends with its job inside the clause:
| Croatian | Case at work |
|---|---|
| čovjek kojeg sam vidio | accusative — the man whom I saw |
| žena kojoj sam dao knjigu | dative — the woman to whom I gave the book |
| grad u kojem živim | locative — the city I live in |
| prijatelj s kojim putujem | instrumental — the friend I travel with |
The Honest da Rule
Since chapter two you've heard "the infinitive is Croatian, da is Serbian." Here's the honest version:
| Rule | Example |
|---|---|
| same subject → infinitive | Želim doći. — I want to come. |
| different subjects → da + present | Želim da ti dođeš. — I want YOU to come. |
Although and Even If
| Croatian | English |
|---|---|
| Iako pada kiša, idemo. | Although it's raining, we're going. |
| Premda je skupo, vrijedi. | Although it's expensive, it's worth it. |
| Čak i ako pada, idemo. | EVEN if it rains, we're going. (the stubborn version) |
The Full Clitic Cluster
When the little words pile up, their order is law: li > auxiliary > dative > accusative > se.
| Croatian | Slots |
|---|---|
| Dao sam mu ga. | aux(sam) > dat(mu) > acc(ga) — I gave it to him. |
| Jesi li mu ga dao? | li > dat > acc — Did you give it to him? |
| Javit ću ti se. | aux(ću) > dat(ti) > se — I'll get in touch. |
This is the arc that began with «Petra je profesorica» in chapter one: sam → ću → bih → the full cluster. One law, faithfully applied, from your first sentence to your last.
je Goes Last
One elegant exception: the auxiliary je yields its slot and stands at the cluster's end —
Dala mu ga je.
She gave it to him.
Note: je — the only clitic with manners — waits for everyone else. And before se it vanishes entirely: vratila se.
💬 The final boss, defeated
Knjiga koju sam ti posudio — jesi li je pročitala?
The book I lent you — did you read it?
Jesam! Dala sam je i sestri, iako je nisam trebala.
I did! I gave it to my sister too, although I shouldn't have.
Želim da mi je vratiš.
I want you to return it to me.
Vratit ću ti je. Kad je sestra pročita.
I'll return it to you. When my sister reads it.
