Aspect-mastery in Russian

Aspect Mastery: the Native Touches

You know the pairs and both futures. What remains are the corners where aspect quietly signals politeness, undone actions and the phases of things — the details that make Russians say «как хорошо вы говорите!».

Invitations Stay Imperfective

Type
one-time request
Aspect
perfective
Examples
Скажите! Дайте! Покажите!
Type
welcome / encouragement
Aspect
imperfective
Examples
Заходите! Садитесь! Угощайтесь!

Phases Take Imperfective

Начать, продолжать, закончить — begin, continue, finish — always take an imperfective infinitive:

Russian
Я начал читать.
English
I started reading.
Russian
Она продолжает работать.
English
She continues working.
Russian
Мы закончили ужинать.
English
We finished having dinner.

Logic: a phase carves a piece out of an ongoing process — and ongoing is imperfective territory.

The Annulled Result

Я открыл окно. / Я открывал окно.

I opened the window (it's open). / I had the window open (it's closed again).

Note: Imperfective past can mean happened-then-reversed. The result got annulled; only the event remains.

Same with приходил (came and left again) vs пришёл (came and is here). Detectives and jealous spouses live on this distinction.

The Mastery Mindset

Гость

К вам кто-то приходил?

Did someone come by? (and leave)

Хозяин

Да, Том заходил. Заходите и вы, кстати! Садитесь!

Yes, Tom dropped in. Come in yourself, by the way! Sit down!

Aspect isn't a rule to obey but a meaning to choose: process or result, open door or single act, standing or undone. Ask which you mean — the form follows.

Common Mistakes

  • Начал прочитать. Phase verbs refuse perfectives: начал читать.
  • Садитесь replaced by Сядьте. Grammatically fine, socially a courtroom. Guests get imperfectives.
  • Missing the annulment. Он приходил means the visitor is gone. If he's still here — он пришёл.

What You Can Do Now

You choose aspect on purpose now — in requests, welcomes, phases and subtle pasts. This is the layer where correct Russian becomes natural Russian.
