Etymology
Inherited from Old East Slavic полъ (polŭ, “open from above, uncovered”), attested in a 14th-c. birchbark letter (No. 59) in "полои води" 'floodwaters.GEN.SG' (cf. Russian половодье (polovodʹje)). Modern meaning attested since 1636. Related to Proto-Slavic *poľe (“field”) and *polnъ (“flat, smooth, plain”), both from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂- (“flat”).
