Taking Transport in Polish: Autobusem, Tramwajem, Pociągiem
The case that made you a student in Chapter 2 now drives you around town: how you travel is the bare instrumental. One ending, every vehicle.
Vehicles Ride the Instrumental
| Vehicle | By it |
|---|---|
| autobus | autobusem |
| tramwaj | tramwajem |
| pociąg | pociągiem |
| samochód | samochodem |
| taksówka | taksówką |
Jadę do Warszawy pociągiem.
I'm going to Warsaw by train.
Note: do + genitive for the destination, instrumental for the ride — Chapter 2 and 3 in one sentence.
Tickets
bilet normalny — full fare; bilet ulgowy — reduced (students, seniors — Polish student discounts are legendary). Buy at the biletomat (machine), a kiosk, or in most cities an app.
Validate It!
The rule visitors learn the expensive way: a paper ticket must be stamped on board — skasować bilet — in the little yellow box. An unstamped ticket is no ticket to the kanar (the fare inspector of urban folklore).
Stops, Stations, Announcements
przystanek — a bus/tram stop; dworzec — the big station. On board, the voice you need: Następny przystanek:… — next stop… Trains add peron (platform) and odjazd (departure).
Przepraszam, czy ten tramwaj jedzie na dworzec?
Excuse me, does this tram go to the station?
Tak, trzy przystanki.
Yes, three stops.
Następny przystanek: Dworzec Główny.
Next stop: Main Station.
Dziękuję!
Thanks!
Common Mistakes
- na autobusem / w autobusie for “by bus”. Just the bare instrumental: jadę autobusem.
- Pocketing an unstamped ticket. Bought ≠ valid. Stamp it.
- przystanek vs dworzec. Trams stop at przystanki; trains live at the dworzec.
What You Can Do Now
You can buy the right ticket, validate it like a local, catch your stop from the announcement, and tell anyone how you're traveling — miasto is yours.
