The perfect tells everyday stories
Use the past you know: стигли смо, видели смо, разговарали смо. Change aspect to show background process versus completed event.
Док смо чекали, почела је киша.
While we were waiting, it started to rain.
Set the scene
једном, једног дана, прошлог лета and кад сам био/била мали/мала quickly establish when a story happened.
Прошлог лета смо путовали по Србији.

Прошлог лета Јелена је отишла код баке у село близу Крагујевца. Прво су заједно направиле питу, а онда су кренуле у шетњу. Док су пролазиле поред реке, почела је јака киша. Склониле су се под стару надстрешницу, али аутобус је већ отишао. «Како ћемо кући?», упитала је Јелена. Тада је наишао бакин комшија Милош и понудио им превоз. На крају су стигле мокре, али насмејане. Бака је скувала чај, а Јелена је рекла да ће ову авантуру дуго памтити.
Last summer Jelena went to visit her grandmother in a village near Kragujevac. First they made a pie together, and then they went for a walk. While they were passing the river, heavy rain began. They sheltered under an old canopy, but the bus had already left. “How will we get home?” Jelena asked. Then the grandmother's neighbour Miloš came by and offered them a lift. In the end they arrived wet but smiling. Her grandmother made tea, and Jelena said she would remember this adventure for a long time.
