Eating Out in Croatian
A restoran is where you take your in-laws; a konoba is where the fish was swimming this morning. This lesson orders a full meal — and finally lets you in on the mysterious little sentence you'll hear at every table.
Where to Eat
| Croatian | What it is |
|---|---|
| restoran | restaurant — the formal option |
| konoba | coastal tavern: grilled fish, local wine, no hurry |
| pizzeria | exactly what you think, often excellent |
| marenda | the coastal late-morning workers' meal |
| gablec | Zagreb's cheap-lunch institution |
Ordering — and «Ja ću kavu»
You know Ja bih kavu, molim. Croatians also order with a stranger little sentence:
Ja ću kavu.
I'll have a coffee.
Note: Literally “I will a coffee” — a future-tense clitic with the verb politely omitted. Learn it as a chunk; the grammar arrives in the future-tense lesson.
Add-ons and repeats stay in the accusative you own:
| Croatian | English |
|---|---|
| Još jedno pivo, molim. | One more beer, please. |
| Još jednu kavu, molim. | One more coffee, please. |
| Što preporučujete? | What do you recommend? |
The Menu Decoded
| Croatian | English |
|---|---|
| juha | soup |
| riba | fish |
| meso | meat |
| prilog | side dish |
| crni rižot | black (squid-ink) risotto — the coastal classic |
| blitva | chard with potato — the side of the Adriatic |
Paying Up
| Croatian | English |
|---|---|
| Račun, molim. | The bill, please. |
| Je li to sve? | Is that everything? (the waiter, to you) |
| napojnica | the tip — round up or leave a little |
Croatian tipping is modest: round up, or leave a few euros for good service — no percentage mathematics required.
💬 Dinner at the konoba
Izvolite?
What'll it be?
Ja ću crni rižot, i jedno bijelo vino.
I'll have the black risotto, and a white wine.
Odlično. Uz to blitva?
Excellent. Chard with that?
Može! I na kraju — račun, molim.
Sure! And at the end — the bill, please.
Polako, polako. Prvo dobar tek!
Easy, easy. First — enjoy!
