Choosing the Right Register
Sound respectful, neutral or familiar on purpose.
Ti, Vi and polite address
Use ти with close, familiar contacts and Ви for one person addressed respectfully. Capital Ви highlights that respectful singular use in writing. господине and госпођо are vocative forms.
Madam, are you next?
Neutral and colloquial questions
«Да ли је слободно?» is neutral and works broadly. «Је л' слободно?» is common in conversation but belongs to an informal spoken register.
Excuse me, is this seat free?
Familiar signals
«Шта има?» is an informal greeting among familiar people. бре adds emotion or emphasis and can be friendly in the right relationship, but it is risky with strangers and unsuitable in most formal communication.
Hi, what's up?
Soften the request
молим вас, извините and conditional «да ли бисте могли…» leave the listener room to respond. The natural cluster is «да ли бисте могли да ми помогнете».
Could you please help me?
Small words, social tone
Diminutives such as кафица and пивце can express warmth, informality or a light invitation, not only small size. Word order also shifts focus: «Вама сам послао поруку» stresses you.
Shall we go for a coffee? (friendly)
