Identify the job of the text
A sign, timetable, message, report and story organise information differently. First ask what the text is trying to make you know or do; that predicts which details matter.

Opening hours: Monday–Friday, 8–16.
Read a chunk before a word
Mark names, numbers, connectors and the main verb. Endings reveal roles: «према саопштењу» names a source, while perfective «порастао је» presents a completed increase.
Према саопштењу, број посетилаца је порастао.
According to the statement, the number of visitors increased.
Switch scripts, keep the sentence
Public text may use either script. «ОТВОРЕНО ДО 20 ЧАСОВА» and «OTVORENO DO 20 ČASOVA» carry the same Serbian wording; decode letters without retranslating the meaning.

Rebuild the clitic skeleton
Locate the stressed verb and attach its small words before translating: «Послала му је поруку» has dative му and auxiliary је. Natural Serbian order rarely matches word-for-word English order.
Послала му је поруку чим је стигла.
She sent him a message as soon as she arrived.
Look up less, remember more
Guess from context, then verify only words that block the main idea. Save the whole phrase with its source and revisit it later; a dictionary gloss without the sentence loses aspect, case and register.
Због радова не радимо до петка.
Because of construction work, we are closed until Friday.
Connect notice, message and report
A real situation may move across genres. Read the notice for the immediate instruction, the message for the speaker's practical response, and the report for sources, attribution and checked evidence.
У четвртак ујутру Ана је стигла на станицу код Вуковог споменика и на електронској табли прочитала обавештење: „ЗБОГ РАДОВА ТРАМВАЈИ 5 И 10 НЕ САОБРАЋАЈУ ДО ТРГА РЕПУБЛИКЕ. ПУТНИЦИ МОГУ ДА КОРИСТЕ АУТОБУС 26.” Требало је да у девет буде у градској библиотеци, па је колеги Марку послала поруку: „Трамвај не иде до центра. Каснићу десетак минута. Молим те, реци им да почну без мене и сачувај ми место.” Док је чекала аутобус, отворила је вест на телефону. У извештају је писало да су радови почели два дана раније због оштећења шина. Градско саобраћајно предузеће навело је да ће измена важити до недеље увече и да ће на станицама бити додатни редари. Једно удружење путника, међутим, тврди да обавештења нису постављена на свим стајалиштима. Према њиховим речима, путници су претходног дана дуго чекали аутобус који је заменио трамваје. Редакција је проверила три станице и на једној није нашла никакво обавештење. Ана је стигла у библиотеку у 9.12. Састанак је већ почео, али јој је Марко сачувао место и кратко јој пренео шта је пропустила.
After a tram notice changes Ana's route, she messages Marko, reads a sourced report about the disruption and reaches the meeting twelve minutes late.
