Serbian Prepositions & Cases
A Serbian preposition never travels alone — each one demands a specific case from the noun after it. Learn the preposition and its case together, as one unit, and half the case system installs itself for free.
Prepositions Choose Cases
The same noun wears different endings depending on the preposition in front:
- из Београда — from Belgrade (genitive)
- у Београду — in Belgrade (locative)
- у Београд — to Belgrade (accusative)
Three phrases, one city, three endings — and each is completely predictable from the preposition + meaning.
The Genitive Crowd
The biggest gang of prepositions all take the genitive:
| Preposition | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| из (iz) | from, out of | Ја сам из Србије. — I'm from Serbia. |
| код (kod) | at someone's place | Вечерас сам код баке. — I'm at grandma's tonight. |
| без (bez) | without | кафа без шећера — coffee without sugar |
| до (do) | up to, until | до центра — up to the centre |
| поред (pored) | next to | поред прозора — next to the window |
Код is a small treasure: код мене — at my place; Идем код лекара — I'm going to the doctor's.
Једну кафу без шећера, молим.
One coffee without sugar, please.
Note: Latin: Jednu kafu bez šećera, molim. Без + genitive, at the café where you'll actually say it.
у and на: Direction vs Location
The pair you'll use most. Each takes two cases — and the case answers a question:
| Question | Case | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Куда? (where to) | accusative | Идем у град. / Идем на посао. |
| Где? (where at) | locative | Живим у граду. / Ја сам на послу. |
Motion → accusative; parked → locative. One vowel of difference (у град vs у граду) carries the whole distinction, so Serbian ears listen for it closely.
Идем у град. Бићу у граду до три.
I'm going into town. I'll be in town until three.
Note: Latin: Idem u grad. Biću u gradu do tri. The same у, two cases: motion, then location.
Choosing between у and на: у goes with enclosed places (у кући, у школи, у биоскопу), на with surfaces, events, and open spaces (на столу, на утакмици, на тргу) — plus the idiomatic на кафи (out for coffee) and на послу (at work).
са: With
са (or just с) + instrumental covers company and accompaniment:
| Cyrillic | Latin | English |
|---|---|---|
| са братом | sa bratom | with my brother |
| са сестром | sa sestrom | with my sister |
| кафа са млеком | kafa sa mlekom | coffee with milk |
| са задовољством | sa zadovoljstvom | with pleasure |
Means of transport skip the preposition entirely and use the bare instrumental: идем аутобусом / возом — by bus / by train.
The Beginner's Cheat Sheet
| Preposition | Case | Anchor phrase |
|---|---|---|
| из | genitive | из Србије — from Serbia |
| код | genitive | код баке — at grandma's |
| без | genitive | без шећера — without sugar |
| у (motion) | accusative | у град — into town |
| у (place) | locative | у граду — in town |
| на (motion) | accusative | на посао — to work |
| са | instrumental | са братом — with my brother |
Seven anchor phrases, spoken aloud until they feel obvious — that's the entire assignment.
Вечерас идем код баке са сестром.
Tonight I'm going to grandma's with my sister.
Note: Latin: Večeras idem kod bake sa sestrom. Two prepositions, two cases, one very Serbian evening.

💬 Weekend plans
Где си за викенд?
Where are you this weekend?
У суботу сам код родитеља, у Крагујевцу.
On Saturday I'm at my parents' place, in Kragujevac.
Идеш возом или аутобусом?
Are you going by train or by bus?
Возом, са братом. А у недељу идемо на планину.
By train, with my brother. And on Sunday we're going to the mountain.
Common Mistakes
- Same ending for motion and location. Живим у град is the classic beginner tell. Parked = locative: у граду. Going = accusative: у град.
- Using у for events and open places. Work, matches, coffee dates and squares take на: на послу, на утакмици, на кафи.
- Word-for-word "at grandma's house". Serbian compresses it into код + genitive: код баке — no word for "house" needed.
- Adding са to transport. By bus is bare instrumental: аутобусом, not са аутобусом (that would mean physically together with the bus).
- Learning cases as tables first. Learn the seven anchor phrases instead — из Србије, код баке, без шећера… — and let the endings generalise from there.
What You Can Do Now
You can say where you're from, where you're going and where you are, who you're with, and how you're travelling — the questions that make up most small talk. Order кафу без шећера, announce идем код баке, and distinguish у град from у граду like someone who's been here a while. The full case tables are next door in the seven cases whenever you're ready.
