Opinions in Russian

In My Opinion: Stating & Defending Views

B1 begins here: you stop describing the world and start arguing with it — politely. Four frames carry every opinion you'll ever offer.

I Think That…

Я считаю, что это хорошая идея.

I believe it's a good idea.

Note: что introduces the clause — Russian never drops its 'that'.

Hedging

Agree and Disagree

The «с» takes the instrumental: с тобой, с вами, с Анной — agreement is something you do with someone.

Asking for Opinions

Что вы думаете о + prepositional carries the topic: Что вы думаете о Москве? — What do you think of Moscow?

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping что. Я думаю, это хорошо is heard, but the standard is я думаю, что это хорошо.
  • Согласен without с. You agree with someone: согласен с тобой (instrumental).
  • Forgetting your gender. Согласен / согласна, уверен / уверена — short forms track the speaker.

What You Can Do Now

You can state a view, soften it, back it, and take sides in a discussion without bruising anyone — the entrance ticket to real Russian conversation.
