Motion-system in Polish

The Full Polish Motion System: Prze-, Ob-, Nad- and the Carrying Verbs

Chapter 4 gave you arrive and leave; this lesson finishes the machine — across, around, up-close — and adds the three carrying verbs that move everything else. After this, no Polish verb of motion can surprise you, literal or figurative.

The Remaining Prefixes

Prefix

across / through
Example
przechodzić przez ulicę — to cross the street
Prefix
ob-
Meaning
around
Example
objechać miasto — to drive around the city
Prefix
nad-
Meaning
approaching
Example
Nadjeżdża autobus! — the bus is coming!
Prefix
pod-
Meaning
up close
Example
Taksówka podjechała pod dom.
Prefix
wy- (już znasz)
Meaning
out / away
Example
wyjechać z Polski — to leave Poland

Figurative Rides

The motion system runs half of abstract Polish: przeprowadzić się — to move house (lead yourself across town); przeprowadzić rozmowę — to conduct an interview; przejść do rzeczy — to get to the point. See a motion prefix on an abstract verb? Decode it spatially and the meaning usually falls out.

Przeprowadzamy się do Krakowa w maju.

We're moving to Kraków in May.

Note: prze- (across) + prowadzić (lead) + się — leading yourselves across. The moving-day verb.

The Carrying Triad

Carrying splits exactly like going — now vs habitually, feet vs wheels:

Verb pair
nieść / nosić
Means
carry on foot (now / habitually)
Example
Niesie walizkę. / Nosi okulary.
Verb pair
wieźć / wozić
Means
carry by vehicle
Example
Wiozę dzieci do szkoły.
Verb pair
prowadzić
Means
lead — and drive
Example
Prowadzi firmę. Prowadzi samochód.

prowadzić samochód

Poles don't drive a car — they lead it: prowadzić samochód. Kto dziś prowadzi? — who's driving tonight? (The answer decides who drinks kompot.) prowadzić also leads firms, meetings and orchestras — one verb, many wheels.

Ola

Nadjeżdża nasz autobus!

Our bus is coming!

Tom

Biegnę! Ale niosę cztery torby!

Running! But I'm carrying four bags!

Ola

Trzeba było nie kupować tylu pamiątek.

Shouldn't have bought so many souvenirs.

Tom

Przecież to prezenty!

They're presents, obviously!

Common Mistakes

  • nieść for habits. Glasses are worn regularly: nosi okulary, not niesie.
  • wozić on foot. wieźć/wozić needs wheels; your own two feet carry with nieść/nosić.
  • jechać samochód. You drive by leading: prowadzić samochód (or jechać samochodem — by car).

What You Can Do Now

You can express any movement — of yourself, your luggage, your company or your point — with the right verb, the right prefix and the right amount of Polish precision.
