Your Life in Croatian
Four chapters of grammar become one connected story: yours. This is the A2 checkpoint — not a quiz, but a monologue. Three minutes about your life, held together with jer and ali. Everything you need, you already have.
The Mortar Words
Sentences become paragraphs when reasons connect them:
| Croatian | English |
|---|---|
| jer / zato što | because |
| ali | but |
| ako | if |
| kad | when |
| i… i… | both… and… |
Učim hrvatski jer volim more.
I'm learning Croatian because I love the sea.
Note: The most honest sentence in this course, probably.
Past, Present, Future — One Story
Three tenses, one life:
| Tense | Croatian |
|---|---|
| past | Prošle godine sam bio u Splitu. |
| present | Sada učim hrvatski i radim u Zagrebu. |
| future | Sljedeće ljeto ću ići na otoke. |
Notice the clitics keeping the law in every tense: prošle godine sam bio, sljedeće ljeto ću ići — always second.
The Three-Minute Monologue
The blueprint — each line is a chapter of this course:
| Part | Frames to use |
|---|---|
| Who you are | Zovem se… Ja sam iz… Imam … godina. |
| Your day & home | Živim u… Radim kao… Stan ima… |
| Your city & trips | Sviđa mi se… Bili smo na… Išli smo trajektom… |
| Plans & loves | Igram… Veselim se… Sljedeće godine ću… |
Živim u Zagrebu, ali volim more — i zato ljeti uvijek idemo na otoke.
I live in Zagreb but I love the sea — and that's why in summer we always go to the islands.
Note: ali + zato + ljeti + na otoke: the Croatian condition, one sentence.
The Honest Checkpoint
Say your story aloud — to a mirror, a cat, or an unusually patient friend. Two to three minutes, connectors included, panic excluded. If the words keep coming, you've passed a real A2 oral exam topic.
💬 The opening, modeled
Zovem se Ana i dolazim iz Irske.
My name is Ana and I come from Ireland.
Živim u Splitu godinu dana i radim kao učiteljica.
I've lived in Split for a year and work as a teacher.
Učim hrvatski jer mi se sviđa — ali padeži su teški!
I'm learning Croatian because I like it — but the cases are hard!
Kad naučim sve, kupit ću kuću uz more. Vidjet ćemo.
When I've learned everything, I'll buy a house by the sea. We'll see.
Vidjet ćemo indeed. Čestitamo — chapter four is yours, and so is your story.
