Invitations in Polish: Może Pójdziemy do Kina?
Social logistics without awkwardness: how to suggest, accept, decline with grace, and actually nail down the time — the difference between "we should hang out sometime" and Friday at seven.
The Gentle Invitation
Może pójdziemy…? — literally "maybe we'll go" — is the Polish "shall we": Może pójdziemy do kina? Może pójdziemy na kawę? The perfective future doing diplomatic work. More energetic: Chodźmy! — let's go!
Inviting Properly
Zapraszam cię na + accusative — I'm inviting you to/for: na kawę, na obiad, na urodziny, na Wigilię. And the warmest of them all: Wpadnij do mnie! — drop by my place.
Zapraszam cię w sobotę na urodziny!
I'm inviting you to my birthday on Saturday!
Note: zapraszać na + accusative — the official invitation verb.
Yes, No, Maybe
Pinning It Down
Umówmy się na siódmą — let's say seven. umówić się — to arrange to meet, the calendar verb of Polish social life. Confirm with To do zobaczenia! — see you then!
Common Mistakes
- zapraszam do kawy. The invitation preposition is na: zapraszam na kawę.
- wolny/zajęty frozen. They agree with you: a woman is wolna, zajęta.
- Accepting an invitation to pay. Zapraszam! at the bill means they're treating — arguing once is polite, twice is theatre, winning is impossible.
What You Can Do Now
You can move a friendship from "sometime" to a table for two at seven — inviting, declining kindly, and rescheduling like someone with a real Polish social calendar.
