The Polish Conditional: Gdybym Wygrał Milion…
One little syllable — by — buys you two superpowers: daydreams (if I won a million…) and diplomacy (I would like…). Best of all, you've already done the hard part: it's built entirely on the past tense.
The -by- Forms
Take the ł-form, slot in -by- plus the personal ending: zrobiłbym (I'd do it, m), zrobiłabym (f), zrobiłbyś, zrobiłby… The star of daily life: chciałbym / chciałabym — I would like.
Chciałbym mieszkać nad morzem.
I'd like to live by the sea. (a man speaking)
Note: chciałbym — the polite, wistful want. A woman: chciałabym.
gdyby — the Unreal If
Real conditions take jeśli (Chapter 4); daydreams take gdyby, with -by- on both sides of the comma:
The national daydream opener: Gdybym wygrał milion… — if I won a million…
The Politeness Engine
Conditional + pan/pani = the most courteous request Polish can produce: Czy mógłby pan powtórzyć? — could you repeat that, sir? Czy mogłaby pani pomóc? In shops, offices and trains, this construction opens doors that chcę never will.
Built on the Past
Every conditional rides an ł-form you already own — including the irregulars: poszedł → poszedłbym (I'd go), mógł → mógłbym (I could). Learn the past once, get the conditional free.
Common Mistakes
- jeśli in daydreams. Unreal worlds take gdyby + -by-: gdybym miał…, kupiłbym.
- Genderless conditionals. A woman would like chciałabym; zrobiłabym.
- będę + by. The conditional replaces the future; there's no *będę bym.
What You Can Do Now
You can speculate, dream aloud and negotiate hypotheticals — and make requests so polite that Polish bureaucracy itself softens slightly.
