Bulgarian Family Words
Family words are where Bulgarian gets charming: instead of a possessive adjective, everyday speech tucks a tiny syllable after the noun. Майка ми — my mother. Two words, and the second one is barely there.
The Core Family

"My" — the Short Way
With family members, Bulgarian says my, your, his with a clitic — a tiny unstressed word right after the noun, no article, nothing to agree:

Note: Noun first, then the little ми — the same 'second position' instinct you trained with съм.

The Full Forms
For emphasis — or for things that aren't family — Bulgarian has full possessives that agree like adjectives:

Той е МОЙ брат.
He is MY brother.
Note: The full form carries stress and contrast. For plain everyday 'my brother', Bulgarians say брат ми.
Wife, Husband, Children
Like much of the Slavic world, Bulgarian doubles two ordinary nouns as spouse words: жена is woman and wife, мъж is man and husband — the clitic makes it unambiguous:
Това е жена ми.
This is my wife.
Note: And Това е мъжът ѝ — that's her husband. Context plus clitic does the work.
One irregular plural is unavoidable this early, because the word is everywhere:
дете → деца
child → children
Note: Децата — 'the children' — will follow you around every Bulgarian courtyard.
Common Mistakes
- Building "my mother" the long way. «Моята майка» is grammatical but marked; everyday Bulgarian says майка ми.
- Putting the clitic first. It follows the noun: майка ми, never ми майка.
- Reading ѝ as "and". The accent is the difference between her mother and mother and….
- Forgetting баща is masculine. мой баща, not моя баща — sense beats the -а ending.
- Regularizing деца. One child is дете, several are деца — no -та plural here (that comes as детЕта for other neuters later).
What You Can Do Now
You can name the whole family, claim yours with the short clitics (майка ми, брат ми), stress ownership with мой/моя/мое when it matters, and introduce your spouse without ambiguity. Practice below — the clitics need to reach your tongue, not just your eyes.
