A family celebration
Крсна слава is a patron-saint celebration observed by many Serbian Orthodox families, not by every Serbian person. Customs vary by family and place.

Objects you may hear named
славски колач, жито and свећа are traditional elements of many slava celebrations. Ask rather than assume: «Како ви обележавате славу?»
На столу су славски колач, жито и свећа.
On the table are the ceremonial bread, wheat dish and candle.
Receiving and offering
«Изволите» can welcome someone or offer something; «Послужите се» invites a guest to take food. A natural response is «Хвала, радо.»
Изволите, послужите се колачем.
Please, help yourself to some cake.
Two kinds of meeting place
A кафић is primarily a café or bar. A кафана is a traditional-style social venue associated with food, drink and often music; real places range from informal to elegant.
Наћи ћемо се у кафићу после посла.
We will meet in a café after work.
Coffee and regional variety
«Домаћа кафа» commonly means finely ground coffee prepared in a small pot. Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš and smaller communities have distinct rhythms; one custom never defines everyone.
