Culture in Russian

How Russians Live: the Unwritten Rules

Grammar gets you understood; culture gets you invited back. This lesson is the operating manual nobody hands you at the border — with the one grammar pattern that explains it all.

It's Customary

English
In Russia you take your shoes off at home.
English
When visiting, tea is the custom.
English
You don't give an even number of flowers.

Принято + infinitive — the done thing; не принято — just not done. Ask «Так принято?» when unsure, and any Russian will happily explain for an hour.

The Guest Protocol

Bring something small: конфеты (sweets), торт, or цветы — flowers in an odd number; even is for funerals. Shoes off at the door; тапочки (slippers) will appear.

The Superstitions

Rule
Or else…
Rule
Or else…
everyone sits in silence before a journey — for a safe road
Rule
Or else…
never shake hands across a threshold — it's a quarrel omen
Rule
Or else…
spit-over-the-shoulder to not jinx good news

The Institutions

What actually is a dacha?

It's a house, a garden, potatoes and a philosophy. In summer all of Russia is at the dacha.

Том

And the banya?

The banya is like a spa, only hotter and more honest. Afterwards people say: 'S lyogkim parom!'

Both have full readings in your library — «Русская баня» and «Лето на даче». Go steam and dig.

Common Mistakes

  • Taking the first «нет, спасибо» at face value — yours or theirs. It's an opening bid.
  • Even-numbered bouquets. Twelve roses reads as condolences. Eleven or thirteen.
  • Whistling indoors. Yes, really. Even if you don't believe it — your hosts' wallets do.

What You Can Do Now

You can enter a Russian home, survive it with honour, and explain your own customs back — «а у нас принято…». That's culture exchange, in the genitive-free sense.
