Colors in Polish — and First Adjective Agreement

Six colors cover most of daily life — and they smuggle in the most important habit in Polish: adjectives change their ending to match their noun.

The Six to Know

Colors Are Adjectives

So they agree with gender, exactly like dobry/dobra/dobre:

Kawa jest czarna, a mleko jest białe.

The coffee is black and the milk is white.

Note: Each adjective tracks its own noun: kawa → czarna, mleko → białe.

Big, Small, New, Old

The same agreement carries every description: duży (big), mały (small), nowy (new), stary (old), ładny (pretty). Ask about color with Jaki to kolor?

To jest stary dom, ale ładny.

It's an old house, but a pretty one.

Note: dom is masculine: stary, ładny.

Common Mistakes

Frozen adjectives. czarny kawa is the beginner's tell — kawa needs czarna.
niebieski ≠ heavenly. It comes from niebo (sky) but just means blue.
Guessing gender from the adjective. Read the noun's ending first, then dress the adjective to match.
