From Adapted to Authentic: Reading Real Polish
The last lesson of the path teaches no new grammar — because you don't need any. It teaches the reading strategies that carry you from Slavonaut's shelf to real Polish books, and then it hands you over to them.
Ninety Percent Is Enough
Real reading starts near 90% comprehension; context carries the rest. The discipline: guess unknown words from their surroundings first, tap-to-define only when a word genuinely blocks the meaning. Guess-then-verify wires vocabulary twice as fast as look-up-first — the near-misses are where learning lives.
Words Are Built From Parts
Polish words are Lego. Decompose before you look up:
Nieprzewidywalność to część przyjemności.
Unpredictability is part of the pleasure.
Note: nie + przewidywalność (foreseeable-ness): a monster word that decomposes into friends.
Find the Verb
When a long sentence resists, find the verb and its subject — Polish word order bends freely, but the verb anchors everything else. Read in chunks, not word by word; phrases carry meaning, single words carry dictionaries.
Your B2 Path
The course ends; the reading begins. The library's top shelf is your syllabus now: Wiedźmin (Sapkowski's stories — the books came first), Solidarność (the movement that ended an era), Bitwa pod Grunwaldem (1410, and Matejko's enormous painting of it), and Pan Tadeusz — the national epic that every Polish schoolchild can start from memory:
Litwo! Ojczyzno moja! ty jesteś jak zdrowie…
Lithuania! My homeland! You are like health…
Note: Pan Tadeusz, line one — an apostrophe in the vocative, which you can now name.

Common Mistakes
- Dictionary-first reading. Look-ups interrupt the exact process that builds vocabulary. Guess, then verify.
- Restarting sentences. Push to the verb before rereading — most fog clears at the predicate.
- Waiting to feel ready. Nobody feels ready for authentic text. Ninety percent and momentum — that's readiness.
