From Adapted to Authentic
The last lesson of the path teaches no grammar — because you have the grammar. What remains is a reader's temperament: momentum over perfection, guessing over stalling, and a shelf of real Croatian waiting on the other side.
Tolerate the Unknown
Real texts always contain words you don't know. The skill isn't knowing them all — it's reading on. 90% comprehension with momentum beats 100% with paralysis; the perfectionist reads one page, the reader finishes the book.

Note: The whole method, in an imperative you can now parse in your sleep.
Guess from the Parts
You own the machinery — prefixes, participles, diminutives, aspect pairs. Unknown words are mostly known parts in new outfits:
| Unknown word | Known parts | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| neprevodiv | ne + prevesti + -iv | untranslatable |
| bezvremenski | bez + vrijeme + -ski | timeless |
| doseljenik | do- + seliti + -nik | an immigrant — one who moved here |
When to Tap, When to Push
| Situation | Action |
|---|---|
| the word blocks the plot | tap it |
| the word is decoration | push through |
| the same word blocks you a third time | tap it AND save it — it's telling you it matters |
Your Graduation Shelf
The reading library's top shelf is yours now: the Republic of Dubrovnik and its diplomats, the cravat — Croatia's gift to every office on Earth, king Tomislav, and Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, «the Croatian Andersen», whose fairy tales are the classic first real book.
💬 The graduation
Što čitaš?
What are you reading?
Priče iz davnine. Ne razumijem svaku riječ, ali čitam dalje.
Tales of Long Ago. I don't understand every word, but I keep reading.
Znaš što to znači?
You know what that means?
Znam. Više ne učim hrvatski — čitam na hrvatskom.
I do. I'm no longer learning Croatian — I'm reading in Croatian.
Jedan tekst dnevno, saved words into review, kavica optional but recommended. Grammar built the boat; reading is the sea. Sretno — i čitaj dalje!
