Authentic-reading in Czech

From Adapted to Authentic Czech: Švejk, Čapek, Cimrman

The last lesson of the path isn't grammar — it's a handover. Everything after this happens in the library, and these are the strategies that make real books readable.

Tolerate the Unknown

Authentic texts hide 5–10% unknown words even from strong readers. The skill isn't knowing everything — it's momentum: read the sentence to the end before deciding you're lost. Context downstream solves most words for free.

Words Decompose

You own the parts now: prefixes (od-, pře-, vy-, roz-), the -ní nouns, the -ící participles, -árna places. nepřeložitelný = ne + pře + ložit + elný — un-trans-lat-able. odjezd = od + jezd — departure. Guess from parts, verify from context.

čekárna, kavárna, lékárna, knihkupectví

waiting room, café, pharmacy, bookshop

Note: -árna marks places; knih + kupectví = book-selling-place. The parts never stop paying.

Tap Wisely

Tap-to-define is for load-bearing words — the ones the paragraph leans on. If the sentence works without the word, push through; the SRS deck catches the stragglers on the next pass. Reading fast and rereading beats reading slow once.

Jana

Tak co čteš teď?

So what are you reading now?

Tom

Švejka. Rozumím tak devadesáti procentům.

Švejk. I understand about ninety percent.

Jana

To je víc než někteří Češi.

That's more than some Czechs.

Tom

No jo. Čtu dál.

Well, yeah. I keep reading.

Common Mistakes

  • Stopping at every unknown word. Momentum first; the dictionary is a pit stop, not a residence.
  • Choosing texts by prestige. Read what pulls you forward — Cimrman beats classics you dread.
  • Treating this as the end. It's the handover: the path ends, the reading life begins.

What You Can Do Now

You can read an authentic Czech text with 90% comprehension and no panic, decompose the unknown, tap strategically — and walk into the library where your B2 actually lives. Hodně štěstí — a čtěte dál!
