The Croatian Accusative
Here it is — the case you've been using since «molim jednu kavu». The accusative marks the direct object (what you want, see, drink, buy) and the destination (where you're going). One ending, two superpowers. No other Croatian case earns its keep faster.
The Case of Wanting
The thing acted on stands in the accusative. The visible change is feminine -a → -u:

Neuter nouns don't change at all: pijem vino, jedem meso.
Masculine: Alive or Not?
Masculine nouns split by a wonderfully human rule — is it alive?

That's why Family taught you «imam brata» — brat is alive, so he takes -a. Your flat isn't, so «imam stan» stays put.
The Case of Going
Now the Croatian twist — the one that organizes the whole case system. Destination takes u/na + accusative:

u or na?
u for enclosed places you go into; na for surfaces, events — and a famous list of places Croatian just treats as onto:
