Po roce 1993 přinesla Topolanům celostátní – do jisté míry však i mezinárodní – věhlas nevládní humanitární organizace Dětské centrum 1990 Olomouc, která zde ve dvou někdejších statcích vede speciální školu s chráněnými dílnami, zahradou a jiným zařízením pro děti s kombinovanými vadami.
After 1993 the non-governmental organization Dětské centrum 1990 Olomouc, which here in two former farmhouses leads a specialized school with protected workshops, a garden and other equipment for children with combined disabilities, brought a nationwide – and to a certain extent also international – fame to Topolany.

Etymology
From the accusative of Old Czech topolěné (“people living among poplar trees or at a poplar tree”); compare e. g. Bučany, Dubany, Lipany, Lubany or Olšany. From Proto-Slavic *topolь (“poplar”).
