Etymology

Colloquialized reflex of Ottoman Turkish پيستول (“pistol”) (itself a French or German borrowing), ultimately of Slavic origin. By surface analysis, пищя́ (pištjá, “to squeak, to scream”) + -ов (-ov). Also borrowed into Romanian pișcol (colloquial), Greek πιστόλι (pistóli)).
