ґиґнути
/[ˈɡɪɡnʊte]/
Ukrainianverb
Definitions
- 1.vulgarto die
- 2.obsoleteto throw on the ground
Etymology
Voiced from earlier ки́кнути (kýknuty), from кик (kyk, “death (vulgar)”) + -нути (-nuty), from Proto-Slavic *kykъ (“crook, a certain crooked thing; death (figuratively, taboo)”), from Proto-Indo-European *kew- (“to bend, to crook”), extended to *kew-k. For the semantic development of "crook → death", compare ги́нути (hýnuty) and гну́ти (hnúty).
