Etymology

Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic спѫдъ (spǫdŭ, “modius, bushel; vessel of this size”), Russian Church Slavonic спꙋдъ (spudŭ); compare Slovene spọ̑d (“bucket”) (tonal orthography), Old Polish spąd (“bucket”), from Proto-Slavic [Term?]. More distantly cognate with (and per Trubachev, borrowed from) Middle Low German span (“wooden bucket, dry measure”) (genitive spannes); also cognate with Danish spand (“bucket”), Old Armenian փունդ (pʻund, “vessel, case”), Lithuanian spañgis (“bucket”) (genitive spangė̃; possibly a borrowing from Low German). Eventually from Proto-Indo-European *spondʰos.
