Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic начѧло (načęlo), from Proto-Slavic *načędlo. By surface analysis, нача́ть (načátʹ) + -ло (-lo), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ken- (“new, fresh”), whence English recent and ceno-.
