Definitions

  1. 1.
    dateddarling, sweetheart

Etymology

Related to ладый (ladyj, “dear”), but of disputed origin. Possibly from Proto-Slavic *lada, from Proto-Indo-European *leh₂d- (“to love; beloved, wife”), if cognate with Tocharian B lāre (“beloved”, adjective) (< *leh₂d-ro-) and Lycian 𐊍𐊀𐊅𐊀 (lada, “wife”). Alternatively, simply a substantization of the root of лад (lad, “harmony”) and ладить (laditʹ, “to be on good terms”).
