Nuance & Register
Fluency isn't saying things correctly — it's saying them at the right temperature. This lesson is the thermostat: surprise, politeness, formality and warmth, each with its dial.

| неужели | outright disbelief | Неужели ты не знал?! — You really didn't know?! |
The Politeness Ladder

|---|---|
| bare (friends only) | Дай ручку. |
| standard polite | Дайте, пожалуйста, ручку. |
| soft question | Можно ручку? |
| formal summit | Не могли бы вы дать мне ручку? |
Не могли бы вы помочь мне?
Could you possibly help me?
Note: Built on your бы — the hypothetical softener doing diplomatic service.
Formal vs Among Friends
| Formal / neutral | Among friends |
|---|---|
| До свидания | Пока |
| Хорошо | Ладно |
| Здравствуйте | Привет |
| С уважением (email) | Обнимаю — hugs |
You'll hear «щас» for сейчас and «чё» for что — recognize them, but let your own speech stay a rung above.
Diminutives Are Warmth
| Plain | Warm | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| чай | чаёк | Хотите чайку? — an offer with a smile |
| минута | минутку | Подожди минутку! — soft patience |
| Маша | Машенька | affection |
Common Mistakes
- One register everywhere. All-formal sounds cold to friends; all-casual startles officials. Match the room.
- Diminutives at the bank. Дайте справочку to a clerk can read as ingratiating. Keep them for warm company.
- Writing щас. Colloquial contractions are for ears, not for your emails.
What You Can Do Now
You can run the politeness ladder up and down, dose surprise precisely, and warm a sentence with one suffix. Same grammar, right temperature — that's what natives call «чувство языка».
