Asking Questions
Питања — Ask who, what, where and why — with Serbian да ли.
The question toolkit
ко (who), шта (what), где (where), кад or када (when), зашто (why), како (how), колико (how much/many). Put the question word where the missing information belongs.
Где живиш?
Where do you live?
What kind?
«какав» asks what something is like and agrees with the noun: какав филм, каква књига, какво вино. «који» asks which one.
Каква је кафа?
What is the coffee like?
да ли asks yes or no
Put «да ли» before a normal statement: Говориш српски. → Да ли говориш српски? This is neutral, standard Serbian and works in every tense.
Да ли имате хлеб?
Do you have bread?
Intonation can be enough
In conversation, a rising voice can turn a statement into a question: Ти си из Београда? Keep the normal word order; the context and intonation do the work.
Ово је слободно?
Is this free?
Match ти and Ви
Ask a friend «Где живиш?» and a stranger «Где живите?». The question word stays; the verb carries the familiar or polite relationship.
Како се зовете?
What is your name? (polite)
