Present Tense II: Go, Drink, Eat
Презент II — Meet идем, пијем, једем — and make да-chains sound Serbian.
The -ем and -ијем families
Some common infinitives hide their present stem: ићи → идем, јести → једем, пити → пијем. Learn each first-person form with its infinitive.
Идем на посао. Једем хлеб и пијем воду.
I'm going to work. I'm eating bread and drinking water.
The whole row
The familiar person endings remain: пијем, пијеш, пије, пијемо, пијете, пију. Compare идем, идеш, иде, идемо, идете, иду and једем, једеш, једе, једемо, једете, једу.
Они једу, а ми пијемо.
They are eating, and we are drinking.
Serbian joins verbs with да
After хоћу, желим, морам, могу and волим, use «да» plus a present-tense verb: Хоћу да пијем. Морамо да идемо. Могу да једем. The second verb agrees with the same person.
Желимо да учимо српски.
We want to learn Serbian.
The ending carries the subject
Pronouns are optional unless you want contrast. «Пијем кафу» already means “I am drinking coffee”; «Ја пијем кафу, а он пије чај» contrasts two people.
Пијем кафу.
I'm drinking coffee.
