Giving Opinions in Polish: Myślę, że…, Moim Zdaniem
B1 begins here: you stop describing the world and start arguing with it — politely. Four frames carry every opinion you'll ever offer at a Polish table.
The Opinion Verbs
| Polish | English | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Myślę, że… | I think that… | everyday |
| Uważam, że… | I believe / hold that… | considered |
| Jestem pewien/pewna, że… | I'm sure that… | confident |
Uważam, że to bardzo dobry pomysł.
I believe it's a very good idea.
Note: że introduces the clause — Polish never drops its “that”.
moim zdaniem
"In my opinion" — literally by my judgment, a fossilized instrumental: Moim zdaniem Kraków jest piękniejszy. Its twin: według mnie — according to me. Both buy you the floor without picking a fight.
Taking Sides
| Polish | English |
|---|---|
| Zgadzam się z tobą. | I agree with you. (z + instrumental) |
| Nie zgadzam się. | I disagree. |
| Masz rację. | You're right. |
| To prawda. | That's true. |
| Nie sądzę. | I don't think so. |
Asking for Opinions
Co myślisz o + locative? — what do you think about…: Co myślisz o tym filmie? Jak uważasz? — what's your view? And when you're won over: No właśnie! — exactly!
Co myślisz o polskiej kuchni?
What do you think of Polish cuisine?
Uważam, że jest lepsza niż jej sława.
I think it's better than its reputation.
Lepsza?! Ona jest najlepsza.
Better?! It's the best.
Chyba masz rację.
You're probably right.
Common Mistakes
- Dropping że. Myślę, że to dobre — the że stays, always.
- zgadzam się z ty. With takes the instrumental: z tobą, z wami, z Olą.
- mam rację about others. You're right is MASZ rację; I'm right is mam rację — easy to flip mid-debate.
What You Can Do Now
You can state a view, weight it honestly, back it with bo, and take sides without bruising anyone — the entrance ticket to real Polish conversation.
