Locative-case in Serbian

Where You Live: the Locative

Локатив — У Београду, на послу — being there instead of going there.

Being somewhere

Location — where you are — takes у or на + locative. Masculine and neuter nouns commonly end in -у: у граду, у Београду, на послу, на мору.

Живим у Београду.

I live in Belgrade.

Feminine nouns end in -и

Feminine nouns in -а usually change to -и: у школи, у кући, на плажи. Country names such as Србија also follow this pattern: у Србији.

Она је у школи.

She is at school.

The motion–location pair

The same preposition can introduce two cases: идем у град means motion toward town, while живим у граду means location. Accusative answers “where to?”; locative answers “where?”

у град / у граду

into town / in town

О means about

Use о + locative for the topic of a thought or conversation: говоримо о послу, разговарамо о путовању, причам о породици.

Говоримо о послу.

We're talking about work.

Ask где?

«Где?» asks where someone or something is: Где живиш? Где је Ана? Answer with у or на + locative.

Где живиш? — У Новом Саду.

Where do you live? — In Novi Sad.
