What's Where
One pattern furnishes every room — в + prepositional + есть:
В комнате есть диван, кресло и лампа.
In the room there are a sofa, an armchair and a lamp.
Note: The same есть as «у меня есть», pointed at a place instead of a person.
And to find things, где + the prepositional answer:
Где мой телефон?
Where's my phone?
На столе в кухне.
On the table in the kitchen.
А ключи?
And the keys?
В сумке!
In the bag!
дом vs дома
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| дом | a house / building | Это мой дом. |
| дома | at home (where?) | Я дома. — I'm home. |
| домой | homeward (where to?) | Я иду домой. — I'm heading home. |
Common Mistakes
- Дом for “at home”. Я дом means "I am a house." You want Я дома.
- Кровать as masculine. A soft-sign noun, and feminine: моя кровать.
- Forgetting есть. В комнате диван works, but В комнате есть диван is the full, natural "there is".
What You Can Do Now
You can give a room-by-room tour of your home, say what's in each room, and find anything that's lost — все ключи, все телефоны.
