Emotions in Serbian

Feelings & Reactions

Осећања и реакције — Say how you feel — and what caused it.

Adjectives match the person

срећан/срећна, тужан/тужна, уморан/уморна. The adjective agrees with the speaker: «Уморна сам» from a woman, «Уморан сам» from a man.

Срећан сам што си овде.

I'm happy that you're here. (male speaker)

Dative feelings

Many reactions put the experiencer in the dative: драго ми је (I'm glad), жао ми је (I'm sorry), досадно ми је (I'm bored). Replace ми with ти, му, јој, нам or вам.

Драго ми је што смо се упознали.

I'm glad we met.

A fact takes што

After a reaction to a real fact, use што: «Жао ми је што касним.» Compare an intention with да: «Надам се да не касним.»

Жао ми је што не могу да дођем.

I'm sorry that I can't come.

Reflexive emotions

радујем се (I look forward), бринем се (I worry), плашим се (I'm afraid). The reflexive clitic still stays near the front: «Сутра се радујем путовању.»

Радујем се викенду.

I'm looking forward to the weekend.

Missing someone

«Недостајеш ми» literally makes the missing person the subject: you are missing to me. For a thing: «Недостаје ми Београд.»

Недостајете нам.

We miss you. (plural/formal)

Put It Together

Keep the lesson goal in view: Say how you feel — and what caused it. Revisit the examples, then test yourself in practice.
