Etymology
The word was introduced into biology by botanist Jan Svatopluk Presl in 1846, who borrowed it either from Polish bedła, Polish bedłka or from some Czech dialect. Comes from Proto-Slavic *bъdla or Proto-Slavic *bъdlo. Compare Lithuanian budė̃ (“sponge, polypore”), both possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bew-, *bʰew- (“to inflate, to blow”).
