Etymology
Botanist Jan Svatopluk Presl used the name čirůwka in 1846 for the genus Russula (which is called holubinka in Czech nowadays), but the word is older with unclear origins. It is related to the Polish dialect expression cyr (“mushroom”), Polish czyr (“tinder”) and Ukrainian чір (čir, “tinder”).
