Etymology
From Proto-Slavic *pelynъ m (attested also as *pelynь f), probably from the root of Bulgarian паля (palja, “to set on fire, to ignite”), пепел (pepel, “ashes”), due to the bitter taste of mugwort. Compare Bulgarian горчи́вка (gorčívka, “felwort”) from горчи́в (gorčív, “bitter”). Other proposals include relation with Proto-Slavic *pelvelъ (“weed”), *polvъ (“pale”).
