Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *lugъ m, *luga f, probably of Germanic origin (see Proto-Germanic *laugō (“lye”)). Mladenov tentatively considers a native origin (at least for some of the meanings), comparing it with native Bulgarian слуз (sluz) (with s-mobile), dial. лу́за (lúza, “mucus”) and possibly obsolete *luža (“puddle, silt”), Lithuanian liū̃gas (“swamp”).
