Inherited from Proto-Slavic *kotarъ, possibly from *kotiti (“to roll, to span”) + -ар (-ar). Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary tentatively compares it with Latin catēna (“chain”), whence loanword Bulgarian катина́р (katinár, “padlock”).
